There's something special about a crisp winter morning. The grass sparkles with frost, your breath hangs in the air, and the animals are already waiting at the gate, knowing breakfast is on its way.

While winter can be beautiful, it's also one of the toughest times of year for livestock and poultry. Cold weather means animals burn more energy just to stay warm, so their nutritional needs increase. Even though they may not look much different, they're working harder behind the scenes to maintain their body temperature.

For chickens, shorter days and colder mornings can mean fewer eggs. Providing a quality layer feed helps ensure they're getting the protein, calcium, and nutrients they need to stay healthy and productive. A small handful of scratch grain in the afternoon can also help keep them occupied and provide a little extra energy as the temperature drops overnight.

Sheep, goats, alpacas, pigs, and other livestock also benefit from good-quality feed during winter. If pasture growth has slowed or frosted over, hay becomes an important part of their diet. Good hay provides valuable fibre, helps keep their digestive systems working properly, and gives them the energy they need when fresh grass is in short supply.

Don't forget fresh water, either. Even on cold mornings, animals need constant access to clean water. If troughs have frozen or become icy, it's worth checking them early in the day.
